Erik Eje Almqvist – Hammer & nails

Build your own furniture with inspiration from the revolutionary designer Enzo Mari.

Imagine being able to whip up a whole room full of furniture in a few days, without advanced tools or prior expertise.

This exhibition is a tribute to the revolutionary Italian designer Enzo Mari, and it shows you how to build good, honest, sustainable furniture with standard wood, a hammer and nails.

Author and carpenter Erik Eje Almqvist has adapted Enzo Mari’s blueprints to Swedish standard boards as well as designed his own furniture using the same basic principles.

In the exhibition, he encourages everyone to pick up the hammer: “It’s a special feeling to sit at a table you built yourself.” But learning to do functional carpentry for your own household needs can also be a way of breaking free from the perception that manufacturing is something others do, and that the only legitimate leisure activity is consuming. As Enzo Mari says, “The best way to avoid being designed is to create things yourself.”
